Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235

In Spring 2012, the Door County YMCA reopened a 5,500-square-foot daycare facility on Egg Harbor Road in Sturgeon Bay that had closed during the economic downturn. The Barker Youth Development Center (named in honor of Y leader and philanthropist, Ruth Barker) serves nearly 100 children on a daily basis with early childhood care, quality programming and YMCA enrichment opportunities. This program center has attained a YoungStar 4 Star rating and provides an important connection to the Y with peace of mind for working families in our community. Our certified staff seeks to instill self confidence in children, working to develop their motor, cognitive, language and social skills. The Y provides daycare children with balanced nutritious meals and encourages healthy eating habits. All children enrolled fulltime receive a youth membership to the Door County YMCA and take regular trips to the Y for fun and age appropriate activities.

Responding to the need to expand our services, the Door County YMCA purchased a vacant 7,200-square-foot daycare building located in the Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park in Spring, 2014. The acquisition of this property offers multiple benefits for the community and opens new opportunities for the Y to serve in the future. The purchase of this facility allows us additional flexibility as we seek ways to meet the future challenges and needs of our community. We are grateful for the financial support of our community partners – Therma-Tron X, NEW Industries and Hatco Corporation – who have helped to make this effort possible.

Our primary consideration in purchasing this building was to provide a permanent home for our 11-week-long summer camp program. This YMCA program, run for more than 20 years, has witnessed continued growth with an average daily attendance of more than 100 children. This site allows us to:

  • Offer an outstanding location to host our "School Day Out Program" with activities for school age children on both scheduled days off during the school year and unscheduled days off due to inclement weather
  • Allows Ministry Door County Medical Center an additional site to better serve their clients in the Industrial Park through their Occupational Therapy and Workplace Wellness Programs
  • Run convenient after work and lunch hour exercise programs for our members who work in the Industrial Park
