Door County YMCA Kaboom Playground from Maxwell Larsen on Vimeo.
In 2013, due to a generous gift from Carla and Ellsworth Peterson, the Door County YMCA purchased approximately 10 acres just north of our Sturgeon Bay Center with the intent to develop this land for multi-purpose recreational purposes. The City of Sturgeon Bay Parks Commission included this parcel as part of the city's 5 Year Park Plan, which may allow us to apply for future grants. The YMCA commenced construction of the first phase of the park's development in July 2014, which was funded through the original Peterson Family gift. This phase included grading the land for future development, the installation of an extended walking path, seeding of all disturbed graded areas, provision of electrical, water and sewer hookups for restrooms and completion of the amphitheater complex (The Peterson family has made one specific request for this property's development - to include an amphitheater to be used for a variety of purposes ranging from children's presentations and plays to exercise classes.)
The current design for future phased in development includes:
- a new playground area (completed)
- multi-purpose paved courts
- splash pad area
- an additional soccer field (the existing field would also be re-positioned to lie in a north/south direction) with all installation of synthetic turf on the field nearest to the Y building
- sand volleyball courts
- development of natural prairie area (through possible collaborative efforts with interested gardening groups).
