Gentle Yoga & Flexibility

Interested in learning the flow and articulation of joints and muscles through a range of movement exercises and yoga poses? Interested in building muscle strength around the joints to prevent injuries? Interested in becoming more pliant and sure of balance? Slow, controlled, purposeful movements are the focus of this class.

 


Meditation

Ages 13+

Meditation transforms stress and helps to heal body, mind and spirit. In this class, we will explore various approaches to meditation and learn about the many benefits derived from meditating. Meditation is especially valuable with so many of us leading such busy lives. It has proven to be a wonderful health benefit. For example, it lowers blood pressure and calms the mind. This class will focus on beginners but those wishing to re-introduce themselves to meditation are welcome as well as those who would like to deepen their practice. Mary Beth Waters is a lifetime meditation coach. She has been taught several methods from various cultures and wants to share some of these with you as well as learn some tips from you. 

 


Pilates/Basic Pilates

Pilates is a highly effective conditioning method that works out your "power house" muscles - the abdominals, lower back, thighs and gluteals! Each movement emphasizes proper body alignment and breathing techniques. You'll build strength, increase your flexibility, develop agility, improve your posture and deepen body awareness. 

 


PiYo Strength

Ages 13+

PiYo Strength is a class designed for mainstream fitness. This unique format combines pilates, yoga, strength conditioning, flexibility, and dynamic balance. PiYo is an up-tempo, non-spiritual approach to mind/body exericses. Offering modifications for beginners to advanced, this class is suitable for all experience levels. 

 


Tai Chi Fundamentals

This class, developed by Tricia Yu, is a systematic approaching for mastering Tai Chi basics progressing from simple to complex patterns of movement. The class introduces relevant mind/body components of Tai Chi practice, combining relaxed fluid movements with a calm alert mental state. It also teaches sequential movement patterns to enable you to perform a slow moving dance-like form based on the traditional Yang style lineage of Tai Chi; it is a great beginner's class for all ages and is traditionally taught in standing but components can be modified in sitting. Pre and post class wellness and balance screens are available and encouraged. Tai Chi, when practiced on a regular basis, has many health benefits including improved strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility. It is also considered a moderate aerobic exercise that can reduce stress levels and enhance the body's immune response.

These movements have their origins in the martial arts, but are performed slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them. A meditative exercise that fosters a calm tranquil mind.

Tai Chi Yang Style Short Forms

Ages 13+

For beginning students. Learn first third of the form. For continuing students. Learn 2nd and 3rd thirds of the form. Must be able to do the first one-third of the form. 


Yoga 1 & 2

The centuries old practice of Hatha Yoga has millions of devotees in America; it offers mind-body exercise that develops balance, strength, flexiblity and promotes confidence and a sense of
well-being. Learn postures, movements. "Listen to your body, go at your own pace."

 


Yoga - Beginners

Ages 13+

This class is designed for beginning yoga students. Participants will learn about the union of their breath and each asana, or posture. The class will help students focus on their breath while building strength. 

 


Yoga - Chair

Ages 13+

Using guided meditation, students will improve their flexibility, strength and balance as they develop stronger back and abdominal muscles. The exercises are performed in a safe, controlled manner, using a chair as part of class. Great for individuals new to Yoga or with some experience. 


Yoga - Lunch Break

Ages 13+

Recharge your day, reduce stress and be more productive all afternoon with a yoga break over your lunch hour! Class will combine yoga postures, breathing, and meditation with the goal to increase your energy and level of relaxation. The postures will slowly and smoothly flow together while linking them to your breath, improving concentration and focus while soothing your nervous system. This class is open to all levels of students.

 


Yoga - Swasthya

Ages 13+

As practiced here at the Y, Swasthya Yoga explores a number of different yogic traditions in a relaxed and comfortabe manner, easily accomplished by all skill and comfort levels. The word swasthya is derived from Sanskrit, meaning well-being of the total person. It uses low impact forms with awareness of breath and movement that incorporate visualization and mindfulness. It is based on Patanjali's basic fundamental yogic rules, which include devotion to the practice, the asana or postures and meditation. 

 


Yoga - Vinyasa

Ages 13+

Vinyasa Flow Yoga builds heat, strength and flexibility. The class sequencing is built around Sun Salutations in which several postures are connected together in a rhythmic flow for a full body experience. A dynamic system of practicing asana, linking breath to movement. This class is not suited for absolute beginners.
