Door County YMCA Expands Summer Foods Program to Serve More Families Across Door County
DOOR COUNTY, WI – The Door County YMCA Sturgeon Bay Program Center is proud to once again sponsor the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), providing free, nutritious meals to children ages 18 and under throughout the summer months while school is out of session.
Rooted in the YMCA’s mission to promote a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, the Summer Foods Program ensures local children have access to healthy, balanced meals that fuel growing bodies and minds during the summer break. Please visit our website www.DoorCountyYMCA.org for a complete listing of our Summer Foods locations and serving times.
New this year, the Door County YMCA is excited to expand meal access through Summer Meals-to-Go Program for families in rural areas, helping reach rural communities where access to meals may be more limited.
Through this new option, each enrolled child will receive a full week’s worth of meals, including 7 breakfasts and 7 lunches, packaged with shelf-stable items that do not require refrigeration or freezing.
“Our goal is to make sure no child goes without nutritious meals during the summer months,” said Annette Varnes, Mission Program Director. “By expanding into rural communities with our Summer Meals-to-Go Program, we’re able to better support families and ensure more children across Door County have access to healthy food all summer long.”

Families should note:
- Children do not need to attend a specific school to participate.
- No proof of income is required.
- The parent/guardian listed during registration must pick up meals.
- Meals are available to all children without discrimination.
- Families with special dietary needs are encouraged to contact the YMCA.
Program guidelines require the YMCA to verify the number of eligible children participating. Parents or guardians will be asked to confirm registration details at meal pickup to ensure meals are distributed to the correct household.
“We are committed to helping children stay healthy, nourished, and ready to thrive,” said Annette Varnes, Mission Program Director. “Summer should be a time for kids to grow, play, and learn—and access to nutritious meals is an important part of that.”
