Sale of Barker and Lansing Avenue Centers

Barker Child Development Center from Egg Harbor Road

STURGEON BAY, WI (July 29, 2020) — The Door County YMCA Board of Directors has agreed to enter into a lease-to-purchase agreement with the Door County Medical Center (DCMC) for the YMCA's Barker Child Development Center, located in Sturgeon Bay on Egg Harbor Road. Door County Medical Center, in turn, will be subletting the facility to a new child care operation being organized by Alexis Fuller, former Barker Center Director for the Door County YMCA. Alexis and her team hope to begin serving area families after Labor Day.

You will recall that we terminated our child care program in late March during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Barker Center has since been utilized the last two months for our summer day camps. We have worked closely with Door County Medical Center on the transfer of the facility and equipment and look forward to supporting the new child care operation.

Separately, the Door County YMCA signed a sales agreement with a local business to sell our Lansing Avenue Center in Sturgeon Bay's industrial park. We are now working on a lease which will allow the Door County YMCA to utilize the Lansing Avenue Center, on a year-round basis, for day camp and school year programming for the next two-to-three years. This allows us to have a place for programming which may be displaced at our Sturgeon Bay program center as a result of the need to spread out wellness center equipment and reduce the size of many fitness classes.

These transactions will allow our staff to be totally focused on rebuilding our program at our two program centers as we get beyond the effects of the pandemic.
