COVID-19 Updates - #StayWithUs

Stay with us

A Message from Door County YMCA CEO Tom Beerntsen - May 14, 2020

Members,

I hope that this email finds you and your family well during this most unusual time. I am certain that you are now aware that The Wisconsin Supreme Court has ruled to end the "Stay at Home" order effective immediately. You are probably also confused about exactly how that decision will affect you and your use of the Y. I did want to take this brief moment to share our plans to reopen our Y facilities and programs.

We have spent the weeks that we have been closed preparing our building for reopening in what will be a different world and involve differences in the way we operate. The safety and well being of our members and staff has been and will continue to be our primary concern. I am pleased to report that our facilities have been prepared to welcome you back to our Y program centers. We will now begin to call back a limited staff and will prepare for your return to the Y.

Our plan now is to reopen our facilities in phases beginning on Monday, June 1st. In the initial phase we will open reconfigured wellness center spaces but not the pool and locker rooms. We intend to open the pool and locker areas in a second phase which we believe will happen before the 1st of July. In July we plan to offer a number of wellness classes with limited class capacities which will recognize the importance of social distancing.

My only caution with sharing our plan with you is that we live a time when the landscape seems to shift on a daily basis. Pending any new information or directives from any governmental agencies, we intend to begin to greet our members and staff back to the Y soon. I want to thank you for your patience during the past several months. We are excited to see you at the Y this summer.

Sincerely,

T. B. signature

Tom Beerntsen, CEO

Frequently Asked Questions
General

What are your business hours during the closure?

We're always happy to serve any of your needs online via email.  In the event you would like to speak to a staff member, the following hours are in effect at each program center:

  • Northern Door Center: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • Sturgeon Bay Center: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

Membership

I understand the Y will continue to draft my membership during the closure. Please tell me, how are those funds being used?

We are very thankful for the support of our members who are continuing their membership during the closure. Supporting the Y by maintaining your membership will allow us to:

  • Operate programs for critical community needs, such as providing child care for the children of families who are working in the front line efforts to contain COVID-19.
  • Ensure that we have sufficient funding to honor our promise to serve all without regard to financial ability once programming resumes through our Membership For All (MFA) program.
  • Support our staff with work options while normal operations are suspended, such as engaging and communicating with our Active Older Adult members.
  • Maintaining and cleaning our buildings in preparation of reopening.

Can I place my membership on hold?

We are happy to place your membership on hold at no charge upon request. To put your membership on hold prior to June's draft, please contact us by May 31. To make any changes to your membership, contact:

I have personal items in a rental locker that I'd like to retrieve. Can I do that?

Yes, we're more than happy to accommodate you.  To make an appointment, contact:

Programs

Can I receive a credit for cancelled Winter 2 session programs?

Program credits will be given upon request. If you would like to invest your dollars in the Y to help sustain operations during this time, it will be appreciated and invested wisely in our important work. If you would like a program fee credited for future use, please contact the Sturgeon Bay Program Center (tfelhofer@doorcountyymca.org) or the Northern Door Program Center (jlardinois@doorcountyymca.org).

Do you have any virtual programming options while we're at home?

Our programming teams - from our Youth Department to Health Living Department - are working to develop engaging and interactive opportunities and resources for all in the community to take advantage of from the convenience of their own homes.  A link to our virtual programming portal will be made available soon; check back for updates!  Our MyY Virtual Resources page has you covered  |  Learn more

Will we be able to register for the next program session?

Due to the uncertainty regarding our ability to re-open and the state's current "Safer-at-Home" Order expiration after the scheduled start of our Spring Session, the upcoming Spring Session has been cancelled. Once allowed to re-open, we plan to offer free try-it classes (based upon instructor availability). Visit our MyY Virtual Resources page for virtual and on-demand fitness classes FREE to you during this time.
